Around the world, bolt-action rifles have long been popular with big game hunters. For those looking for quality-brand used hunting rifles, here's a list of five very popular rifles that have been used by hunters, both in the USA and across the globe:
Winchester Model 70: Several versions of the M70 have existed: pre-64, post-64, and Classic (introduced in the 1990s). Many versions and grades are available. The
308 Winchester is actually a rifle round and is the commercial version of the military 7 62x51mm NATO centerfire cartridge. It was first introduced in 1952. Since then, it has become the most popular short-action big-game hunting cartridge worldwide. The M70 was subsequently chambered for the new cartridge and a rifle that now uses it is commonly referred to as a 308 hunting rifle.
Features of the M70 include a very simple adjustable trigger, a three-position safety on bolt and detachable or non-detachable box magazine with or without hinged floorplate (depending on model), Manufacture of the Model 70 was discontinued in 2006. A new version, based on the pre-64 design, was re-introduced in 2007.
Remington Model 700: Despite having trigger safety problems, this is an enduring rifle, and possibly the most popular bolt-action American hunting rifle of all time. Available in many variations and grades, its featured include an adjustable trigger, a side-mounted thumb safety and detachable or non-detachable box magazine with or without hinged floorplate (depending on the model).
Savage Model 110: While this rifle has a well-deserved reputation for strength and accuracy, it is certainly not one of the most attractive rifles ever designed. While the barrel locknut may be why many call the rifle ugly, it is one of the reasons for its fine accuracy. Features include adjustable trigger, a three-position thumb safety and a detachable or non-detachable box magazine (varies by model), Accutrigger is available on newer models.
Sako 85: Sako are a Finnish company and their rifles have been well-respected for years. They are now sold in the US by Beretta. The Model 85 features a very slick action with a fairly short bolt-throw, which can add up to quick follow-up shots. The 85 is a fine rifle which comes in a number of action lengths - probably more than any other commercially produced sporting rifle. It's available in a number of variations.
Tikka T3: Tikka ia a subsidiary of Sako and so automatically enjoys the prestige that the Sako name brings to the table. That said, the T3 has been criticized for being built using many "manufacturing shortcuts." However, a rifle's worth is measured by how it performs and, in this regard, and the T3 comes up trumps. It has been praised for its smoothness, and features an adjustable trigger and integral
scope mounts. The magazine is the removable box type.
